• Divergent thinking. This is a very valuable problem-solving skill that allows a child to think of many different ways to reach the same end. “How many different ways can I use to get my sister to share her toy?”
Just as children need to exercise their muscles to make them stronger, they need to practice their problem-solving skills too. When your toddler faces a problem, don’t jump into solve it too quickly. Lead your child to think about a solution.
Parenting to Build Problem-Solving Skills:
• Use day-to-day situations to help your child develop problem-solving skills.
• When you solve your child’s problem, explain how you do it and why.
• Give your child toys like stacking and sorting toys that encourage problem solving.
• Encourage divergent thinking that allows your child to think of many different ways to reach the same end.
Avoid:
• Solving your child’s problems before giving him a chance to think how to do it himself.
• Expecting your toddler to know how to solve daily problems without your help.
• Using workbooks or skill sheets to teach problem solving. Use life situations.
• Ridiculing your child’s solution if it seems illogical to you.

For sensory exploration, clay and its many variations provide wonderful opportunities for squeezing, squishing and molding. Finger paints and water play are certain to bring squeals of delight. A child’s cognitive skills are also challenged during play. Playing with things that can be put together and taken apart is great fun. Blocks are also a favorite, especially the ones that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Sorting games, like boxes that fit inside each other or different-sized rings that stack on top of each other, all help your think about how one thing relates to another.
A toddler’s imagination is in full swing—and what a wonderful thing it is to watch this pretend world in action. At this age, toddlers love to do household chores like you; they practice eating and drinking; they play mommy and daddy with their dolls and stuffed animals. In all manner of activities, they like to imitate you. The world of make-believe is a wonderful place for your child to spend time. In the long-run, researchers have found that pretend play can enhance a child’s self-awareness, self-confidence and self-control. It has also been found to have a positive influence on children’s memory, language skills and role taking abilities (Hughes and Noppe 1996).
Don’t worry if your toddler creates an imaginary friend. Research shows that as many as
